This page addresses the question, “What is Computer Science?”, and discusses its place in the collection of computer science-related fields usually referred to as “computing.” It is important that a student contemplating going into one of these fields know the differences so that he or she can find the field that best suits his or her aptitude, interests, and career goals. These are different fields, with different areas of study and different careers and career prospects. There is a lot of confusion in the general public about what computer science (sometimes referred to as simply “computing”) is and how it is different from allied computing-related fields, such as information systems and computer engineering.
